History of Guava
Guava is originally from tropical America, probably Brazil; it was cultivated early on and improved in West Indies.
At the beginning of the 16th century the Portuguese introduced it throughout the Pacific as far as the Philippines and the Spanish took it to India.
The early Spanish explorers of the 1500’s found Strawberry Guava ‘Acca sellowiana.’ growing as a native tree in America, where they were firmly established from Mexico southward to Peru.
The records showed that Seminole Indians were growing guava trees in Northern Florida in 1816.
It then spread and became naturalized throughout the tropical world.
In Vanuatu it is abundant, especially in the southern islands, and it has become a problem for many farmers because its vigorous and uncontrolled growth is hard to eradicate.
Since the 1950’s guavas, have been subjects for diverse research in chemical identity of their constituent, pharmacological properties and history in folk medicine.
