Clementine orange in history

The Clementine was originally detected in Algeria and is becoming one of the most important mandarins in the world.

The clementine- the original ‘tangerine’, so called because the first fruit was imported to the United States via the Moroccan port of Tangier.

It was introduced into the United States in 1909 and brought to California in 1914. The first Clementine appeared in North Africa at the turn of the last century.

Legend has it that the clementine is in fact the happy offspring of a mandarin and a sour orange, a hybrid fruit developed by Father Clement Rowdier in the garden of the orphanage he managed in Algeria.

Clementine is actually not one variety but a group of variety that includes the varieties Fina, Marisol, Esbal, Oroval, Clemenules and others.
