The Big Mac made its appearance in 1968. Big Mag was an original idea of Jim Delligatti. He was one of the earliest franchisees who operated a dozen of stores in Philadelphia.
His instinct to expand the menu was embraced by McDonald’s which agreed to let him test a large sandwich that featured two patties, which he called the Big Mac.
It was an instant hit. As soon as it became apparent that the Big Mac had increased turnover by 10% the company introduced it into three thousand McDonald’s branches within a year.
The following year, the Big Mac was responsible for 20% of turnover. Franchisees’ suggestions and subsequent successful tests also led to the introduction of warm apple pie and the McDonald’s breakfast.
